My Dad taught me a lot but some of it I didn’t use very well. He was a good footballer, I was average; He was a good Dart player; I was OK; He was a good bowler - So am I. Well I had to pick up on something!! Over the years I spent a lot of good quality time with him. He was a plumber and when I was in my teens I worked as his apprentice at weekends. He introduced me to the pub and we played darts in the same teams, he taught me how to play Napoleon so I could substitute on a Sunday night if someone didn’t turn up. We started playing bowls together in the late 70’s and during all this time we were more like mates than father and son. Oh and I nearly forgot the Dart outings to Brighton in the 60’s were amazing fun and I had two and sometimes three uncles on the trips as well. Then from 1992 to 2001 we, that’s with Mum and Dad, went on a Bowls Tour every year with my old club Maiden Erlegh in Reading. Times I will always cherish.
